그리움의 초상(肖像)

아침 이슬이여,

너는 어둠의 울타리에 걸어 놓은 

내밀(內密)의 창(窓)

지순한 그리움의 초상이구나 

춥고 습한 긴밤들을 눈물로 견디며

모든 고통의 순간들은 결국

숭고한 환희로 통하는 길이라는 지혜를 터득한

너의 맑은 이마여!  

지빠귀새 노래에 깨어난 밤이

샛별 따라 멀리 날아가 버리면

여뀌풀 여린 줄기마다 

영롱한 너의 창은 

청사초롱으로 흔들리고

마침내, 환하게 열려오는 동녘 하늘

진줏빛 네 내실의 커튼 젖히며 

웃음 가득 내방하는 

그리운 태양의 황금 옷자락 

너, 그를 맞아 

한 아름 온몸으로 단 한 번뿐인 사랑을 하다가

끝내는 그 빛에 타버릴 가슴이구나.

끝내는 그 빛에 사위어갈 목숨이구나.

• 청사초롱:  청색과 홍색 비단 천으로 등의 갓을 만들고 그 내부에 촛불을 켜는 한국 전통 등블.

A PORTRAIT OF LONGING

O morning dew,
You are a secret window 
Hung on the fence of darkness;
A portrait of pure longing. 

You who endured the cold, damp nights in tears,
And gained wisdom that all painful moments are 
The path ultimately leading to sublime joy;
The pristine forehead of yours!

When the night wakes up to the robins’ song 

And flies away following the Morning-star,

On every slender stem of the knotweed plants

Your window sways and glimmers 

Like a Cheongsachorong.

Finally, the Eastern sky brightens 

And the Sun in his golden gown enters,

Opening your pearly bedroom curtains, 

Beaming bright with his splendid laughter. 

You’ll greet him and love him with your whole body,

The one-and-only love—

Till your heart burns away in his light.

Till your life dries away in his light.

*Cheongsachorong: A traditional Korean lantern with a shade made of blue-and-red silk cloth and a candle lit inside.
