돈 많은 상류층(wealthy upper-class) 사람들은 가난하고 힘없는 이들보다 정말 더 이기적이고(more selfish) 덜 양심적일까(less conscientious)?

세상의 허를 찌르는(catch the world off guard) 기발한 연구에 수여되는 이그노벨상(Ig Nobel Prize)의 올해 경제학상은 ‘부와 비윤리적 행동’의 상관관계(correlation between wealth and unethical behavior)를 고찰한 조사 결과에 돌아갔다.

미국 캘리포니아대 연구팀은 여러 실험을 통해 사회적 계층과 부도덕한 행위의 연관성을 들춰봤다. 그 결과, 상위 계층(high social stratum)일수록 운전 중 몰염치한 끼어들기를 하고(brazenly cut in), 거짓말을 서슴지 않으며(lie without hesitation), 아이들 몫의 사탕까지 가로채는 것으로 나타났다.

가장 웃픈 결과는 ‘아이들 사탕 실험’에서 나왔다. “아픈 어린이들을 위한 사탕”이라는 문구가 적힌 단지(a jar labeled ‘Candy for sick children’)를 보여주며 “그냥 가져가도 괜찮다”고 했다. 그랬더니 부유하고 사회적 지위(social status)가 높은 계층일수록 더 많은 양을 집어갔다. 하류층(low social class)에 비해 거의 두 배를 가져갔다.

교차로(intersection) 실험에선 ‘값비싼 좋은 차(expensive, high-end car)’일수록 양보 운전을 하지(make way for other cars) 않고, 아무 때나 제멋대로 끼어들기를 하는(arbitrarily cut in on a whim) 것으로 조사됐다. 보행자에게 양보하지(yield to pedestrians) 않는 빈도 역시 훨씬 높아 사회적 규범을 대수롭지 않게 여기는(treat social norms lightly) 경향이 도로 위에서도 고스란히 드러났다.

주사위 게임(dice game)과 모의 채용 협상(simulated hiring negotiation) 실험에서도 점수를 부풀려(inflate their scores) 말하거나 더 많은 거짓말을 하는 상류층의 비율(proportion)이 월등히 높았다.

연구팀은 단순히 ‘도덕성 결여’로 단정 짓지(dismiss it as a mere ‘lack of morality’) 않았다. 부와 권력이 쌓일수록 남의 처지나 고통에 공감하는 능력은 둔감해지는(become dulled) 반면, 사회적 구속(social constraints)과 타인의 시선은 개의치 않는 성향이 강해지는 것이라며 다음과 같은 기제(機制·mechanism)를 제시했다.

첫째, 직위나 생활 환경(positions or living circumstances) 특성상 감시망이 상대적으로 느슨해(be relatively lax) 발각될 위험을 낮게 본다.

둘째, 적발되더라도 금전적·사회적 자원이 많아 결과를 감당할(deal with the consequences) 여력이 있다는 생각이 위험 감수를 부추긴다(encourage risk-taking).

셋째, 자신의 이익·욕구·편의를 우선해도(prioritize their own interests, desires, and convenience) 된다는 이기적 생각을 서로 암묵적으로 공유하다 보니(implicitly share the selfish belief), 자기들끼리는 죄의식조차 느끼지 못한다(feel no sense of guilt).
