'무릎을 꿇다'라는 표현에는 여러 종류가 있다. 일반적으로는 'kneel (down)'이라고 하는데, 용서를 빌거나 탄원하기 위해 무릎을 꿇는 것은 'fall (sink, drop) to one's knees' 'go(get) down on one's knees' 등으로 표현한다. 그런가 하면 기도하기 위한 동작은 'genuflect'라고 하고, 저항의 표시로 한쪽 무릎을 꿇는 것은 'take a knee'라고 한다.

오는 7월 개막 예정인 도쿄올림픽에선 'take a knee'를 하거나 주먹을 들어올리는(raise a fist) 행위가 일절 금지된다. 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)가 최근 선수·코치·임원 등 모든 참가자에게 경기장이나 메달 시상대(medal podium)에선 어떠한 정치적 시위를 하는 것도 금지된다는(be prohibited from engaging in any political demonstrations) 가이드라인을 통보했다. IOC뿐 아니라 해당 스포츠 국제기구와 각국 올림픽위원회에 의해 3중 징계조치를 당하게(face three rounds of disciplinary action) 된다는 경고도 못 박았다.

IOC가 이런 특별 지침을 정한 것은 정치·종교·인종적 입장 표명을 해서는(take a political, religious or racial stand) 안 된다는 올림픽헌장 제50조 규정에도 불구하고 위반 사례가 끊이지 않고 있기 때문이다. 일찍이 1968년 멕시코시티올림픽에선 미국 육상선수 두 명이 금메달과 동메달 시상대에 나란히 서서 인종차별에 대한 항의 표시로(in protest against racial discrimination) 주먹을 치켜들어 파문을 일으켰다(cause a stir).

최근 2016년 리우올림픽 때는 마라톤 은메달리스트 페이사 릴레사(에티오피아)가 결승선을 통과하면서 두 손목을 겹쳐 보이며(cross his wrists at the finish line) 반정부 시위자들에 대한 지지를 표시했다(show support with antigovernment protesters). 지난해 8월 팬아메리칸 게임에선 미국 펜싱 선수 레이스 임보든과 해머던지기 선수 그웬 베리가 각각 무릎을 꿇고 주먹을 들어보였다가 12개월 근신에 처해져(be put on probation) 도쿄올림픽에 출전하지 못하게 됐다.

근대 올림픽 창시자인 피에르 쿠베르탱(프랑스)은 1892년 자필로 쓴 올림픽 선언문에서 "스포츠는 정치·종교·인종 등 모든 간섭에서 벗어나 중립을 지켜야 한다"며 " 전 세계를 한자리에 모으는(bring the entire world together) 올림픽의 궁극적 사명(ultimate mission)은 다양한 견해, 삶의 방식, 가치를 서로 이해하도록 돕는(facilitate the mutual understanding of different views, lifestyles and values) 데 있다"고 명시했었다.

그리고 그 사명은 모두 서로의 존재와 입장을 존중해줘야만 이뤄질 수 있다고(be accomplished only if everybody respects each other's existence and point of view) 했다. 그런데 도쿄올림픽에선 무릎 꿇기와 주먹 올리기는 금지하면서 전범 깃발(war criminal flag) 욱일기는 한국 등 참가국들의 거센 반대를 무릅쓰고(despite their vehement opposition) 경기장 반입을 허용하기로 했다.
