대중 앞에 모습을 보일(show oneself in public) 때 두 손을 사타구니 앞으로 모아 포갠 자세를 취하는 이들을 보게 된다. 겸손한 척, 착한 척, 솔직한 척 내숭 떠는(put on an innocent air) 코스프레를 하는(stage a costume play) 것으로 비친다. 이런 자세를 ‘Fig Leaf Posture(Pose)’라고 한다. ‘fig’는 무화과, ‘leaf’는 나뭇잎을 뜻하는 표현으로, 성경에 나오는 아담과 이브가 벌거벗은 몸의 국부를 무화과 이파리로 가린 것에서 비롯됐다.
기본적으로 생식기가 노출되지 않게 감추려는(hide the genitals from exposure) 동작이다. 몸짓언어 전문가(body language expert)들이 말하는 언어적 해석(verbal translation)에 따르면, “나는 과도하게 노출된 기분이 들어 꺼림직해서(feel overexposed and uncomfortable) 손으로 내 음부가 보이지 않게 차단하고자(block my private areas from view with my hands) 한다”는 의미라고 한다.
한 손을 다른 손 위에 얹어(put one hand on top of the other) 허리띠 아래에 모으거나, 양손 손가락들을 깍지 껴(interlock their fingers) 사타구니 앞에 얹거나(rest them in front of the groin) 다르지 않다. 문제는 이 자세가 보는 사람들 시각에선 불안하고, 숫기 없고, 자신감이 결여돼 있음을 드러내는(show insecurity, shyness and lack of confidence) 것으로 받아들여진다는 점이다.
남성이든 여성이든 어쩌다 옷이 벗겨지면(find themselves accidentally disrobed) 본능적으로 몸의 취약한 부위를 손으로 움켜쥐게 된다(instinctively clasp their hands over a vulnerable area of the body). 여성은 한 팔과 손으로는 양쪽 가슴을, 다른 한 손으로는 음부를 가린다. 이에 비해 남성은 양손 둘 다 생식기를 감추는 데 전적으로 동원한다(exclusively conceal their genitals from view). 이 같은 동작은 인지된 공격으로부터 신체의 민감한 부위를 보호하려는(protect their sensitive areas from a perceived attack) ‘싸움 혹은 도주’ 상황에 대한 정신적 반응(mental reaction to the ‘fight or flight’ situation)이다.
실제 생활에서(in real life) 나체가 돼 많은 사람 앞에 노출될 경우는 거의 없지만(rarely find ourselves nude and expose in public), 인간은 과도한 노출에 불안감을 갖게끔 머릿속에 내장돼 있다(be hardwired to harbor feelings of insecurity from overexposure). 앉아 있는 자리에서 무릎 위에 두 손을 모아 붙잡고 있는 것이나, 다리를 꼬는(cross their legs) 행위도 ‘무화과 나뭇잎 자세’의 변형된 형태다.
‘무화과 나뭇잎 자세’는 ‘Loin Cloth(남자 음부를 가리는 폭 좁은 천) Posture’라고 하거나, ‘Broken Zipper(고장난 지퍼) Posture’라고도 한다.
