우크라이나 침공을 감행하고(carry out the invasion) 핵 위협까지 하고 나선 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 ‘Hubris Syndrome(오만 증후군)’에 빠졌다는 관측이 나온다. ‘hubris’는 고대 그리스어로 ‘신의 영역을 넘보는(covet the realm of the divine) 과장된 자부심과 자신감(exaggerated pride and self-confidence), 그로 인해 천벌을 받는(incur the wrath of God) 오만(傲慢)’을 뜻한다.
이런 심리학적 상태(psychological profile)는 최소한 또는 아무런 제약 없이(with minimal to no restraints) 크나큰 권력과 압도적 성공을 보유하는(possess great power and overwhelming success) 인물에게 생겨나는 후천적 성격 장애(acquired personality disorder)다. ‘hubris’에 사로잡힌 인물의 행동과 결정 과정을 망가뜨리는(impair their behavior and decision-making) 이 증후군은 과대망상 등 여러 정신질환과 겹쳐져(be overlapped with various mental illnesses such as megalomania) 나타난다.
다른 사람들에 대해 경멸감을 느낀다(feel contempt for others). 충동적이고 파괴적이며(be impetuous and destructive), 타인의 말이나 충고 받아들이기를 거부하고 독단적 결정을 밀어붙인다(press ahead with their dogmatic decisions). 그러면서 그 힘의 과시에 심취해(be absorbed in the ostentation of their power) 스스로를 우상화하면서 자신을 신의 경지, 그 이상의 존재로 착각하기(delude themselves) 시작한다.
자아 도취 성격(narcissistic personality)이면서도 실제로는 낮은 자존감에 시달려(suffer from low self-esteem) 상처를 잘 받는다(have a thin skin). 실패와 안 좋은 결과를 부인하며(negate their failures and bad outcomes) 자신의 신적인 전능함을 과시하려다(show off their godlike omnipotence) 현실 감각을 잃고(lose touch with reality) 점차 고립에 빠진다. 그러다가 반사회적 인격장애와 조울증(bipolar disorder)이 겹치면 다른 사람들의 삶에 위해를 가하는 지경까지 권력을 남용하면서(abuse their power to the point of damaging the lives of others) 아무런 죄의식을 느끼지(feel pangs of guilt) 않게 된다.
이번 우크라이나 침공은 두 아이를 잃은 부모의 외아들(only son)로 태어나 과보호를 받으며 자란 푸틴의 과거, 비밀경찰(NKVD)이었던 아버지 영향과 본인의 첩보기관 KGB 요원 경험에서 생겨난 옛 소련 붕괴에 대한 굴욕감(sense of humiliation)과 서방에 대한 적개심·피해의식 등 기저 질환(underlying conditions such as hostility, victim mentality and the likes)이 ‘오만 증후군’과 합병증을 일으킨(develop complication) 결과로 볼 수 있다.
