신문사 독자센터엔 요즘 "신문을 통해 코로나19가 전파될(be spread) 가능성은 없나요"라는 질문이 간혹(from time to time) 들어온다. 배달 과정에서 감염될 수도 있지 않으냐는 의구심과 불안(misgivings and apprehension)에서다. 결론부터 말하자면(to begin with the conclusion) 그럴 가능성은 극히 희박하다(be infinitesimal). 인쇄부터 배달까지 위생에 만전을 기하기(wear a belt and braces for hygiene) 때문에 그럴 일이 없거니와 설령 지면에 바이러스가 묻는다(be stained with it) 해도 얼마 안 가 사멸한다(die out).

세계보건기구(WHO)가 엊그제 성명을 통해 이 같은 사실을 공식 확인했다(issue a statement to officially confirm it). 신문과 여타 택배 물품을 통해 바이러스에 감염될(catch the virus from newspapers and other delivered goods) 가능성은 거의 없다고 발표했다. "감염자(infected person)가 배달 물건 등 상품들을 오염시킬 개연성은 낮다(be unlikely to contaminate commercial goods)"고 했다. "각기 상이한 조건과 온도에 노출된(be exposed to different conditions and temperature) 상태와 상관없이 신문이나 택배 상자에서 감염될(be infected by delivered packages) 위험은 낮다"고 명시했다.

과학자들은 바이러스가 각종 재질 표면에서 생존할 수 있는 시간을 그 근거로 제시한다(put it forward as a basis). 조사 결과에 따르면, 마스크 바깥면에선 7일까지 살아남는(survive on the outer layer of a face mask for up to seven days) 것으로 나타났다. 또 플라스틱이나 스테인리스강 표면에선 3일가량 전염성이 남아 있어(remain contagious) 4시간이면 사라지는 구리보다 잠복 기간(incubation period)이 길었다. 이에 비해 택배 상자에 흔히 사용되는 판지(cardboard)는 24시간, 신문 등 인쇄용지는 3시간을 넘지 못하는 것으로 조사됐다.

WHO는 "따라서 독자들은 배달된 신문을 받아보고 손가락으로 여기저기 넘겨보는 데 아무 염려하지 않아도 된다(be assured receiving and flicking through its pages)"고 밝혔다. 다만 만약을 위해(for caution's sake) 집이 아닌 카페나 도서관 등 대중 시설에서 신문을 함께 보는 것은 피하라고(avoid sharing copies) 권유했다.

영국의 바이러스 학자 조지 로모노소프 박사는 "신문은 인쇄·생산 과정으로 인해 살균 상태가 된다(be sterile due to the printing and production proccess)"고 말한다. "영국인들이 생선·감자 튀김을 신문지에 놓고 먹는 것도 바로 그런 이유 때문(eat fish and chips out of newspapers for that very reason)"이라고 한다. 의학 전문가들은 "신문에 의해 감염될(be passed on by it) 우려는 할 필요 없으니, 지금은 신문을 통해 최대한 많은 정보를 습득하는 것이 코로나19 예방에 가장 긴요하다"고 입을 모은다.
