AFP통신은 온 얼굴에 반창고와 붕대를 덕지덕지 붙이고도 초롱초롱한 눈망울과 미소를 잃지(lose their limpid eyes and smiles) 않고 있는 모습의 간호사 사진 15장과 기사를 전 세계에 전송했다. 제목은 '한국 간호사들의 붕대, 명예의 배지가 되다(Korean nurses' bandages become badges of honor).'

"사진 속 간호사들은 교대 근무 전에 매번 이런 보호용 감싸개를 한다(apply the wrappings before each shift). 이들은 한때 중국 외부 최대 발생국이었던 한국의 진원지 대구의 동산병원에서 근무한다.

이 간호사들이 얼굴에 붙인 마찰 방지 패드(antifriction pad), 반창고, 테이프는 코로나19 환자들을 몇 시간 동안 계속 돌보다가(attend coronavirus patients for hours on end) 방호복 착용으로 발생할(develop from their protection suits) 수 있는 아픈 상처로부터 얼굴을 보호하기(protect their faces from painful sores) 위한 것들이다.

구슬땀을 흘리며 일하고 있는(work with sweat running down in beads) 상근·자원 봉사 간호사들(full-time and volunteer nurses)에게 얼굴의 반창고와 패드는 삶과 죽음 갈림길에서(at the crossroads of life and death) 죽음을 무릅쓰는 헌신적 노력(self-sacrificing efforts laying their lives on the line)의 징표가 되고 있다.

취재 대상이었던 대구동산병원에는 약 200명의 간호사가 8시간 교대로 근무하고 있었다(work eight-hour shifts). 절반은 자원 봉사 간호사다.

의사보다 간호사가 얼굴에 반창고와 패드를 더 많이 붙이는 것은 그만큼 환자를 돌보는 시간이 더 많기(spend more time tending patients) 때문이라고 했다. 박혜미라는 이름의 간호사는 AFP통신 취재진에게 싱긋 미소 지으며 말했다. "곧 좋은 일이 생길 거예요."
