모성애(mother's instinctive love)는 자연의 법칙을 이길(beat the natural laws) 때도 있다. 그런 기적 같은 일(something miraculous)이 아르헨티나에서 일어났다.

코르도바주(州)에 사는 세 자녀의 엄마 마리아 페레이라(42)씨는 '묻지 마 폭행'을 당했다(become the victim of an 'unprovoked attack'). 한 달 전쯤이었다. 오토바이에서 내리는데(get off a motorcycle) 20대 남자가 다가오더니 아무 이유 없이 무자비한 폭행을 가했다(brutally assault her for no reason).

쓰러지면서 머리를 바닥에 부딪혔다(hit her head on the ground). 이내 의식을 잃었다(pass out right away). 행인들의 도움으로(with the help of passersby) 급히 근처 병원으로 옮겨졌지만(be rushed to a nearby hospital) 의식을 되찾지(recover her consciousness) 못했다.

응급실(emergency room)로 달려간 남편은 청천벽력 같은 소리를 들었다(hear a crushing news like a bolt from the blue). 뇌사 위험에 처해 있다고(be at risk of brain death) 했다. 며칠 후엔 식물인간이 됐다고(be left in a vegetative state) 하더니 장기를 기증하는(donate her organs) 것이 어떻겠냐고 물어왔다.

하지만 남편 마르틴 델가도씨는 아내를 포기하지(give up on his wife) 않았다. 실낱같은 희망을 버리지(relinquish a faint hope) 않았다. 열일곱, 열셋, 두 살배기 세 아이를 두고 그리 쉽게 이 세상을 떠나지(leave this world) 않으리라 믿었다.

그렇게 한 달이 지났다. 아이들에겐 엊그제서야 처음 병상의 엄마 모습을 보여줬다. 생명 유지 장치를 달고(be put on a life-support system) 있는 모습에 충격을 받을까 봐 망설였다. 첫째와 둘째는 보자마자 울음을 터뜨렸다(break into tears). 두 살배기는 영문도 모른 채(without even knowing the reason) 따라 울었다. 배고프다고 칭얼대면서 엄마 가슴을 파고들었다.

그때였다. 기적 같은 일이 일어났다. 손가락 하나 까닥하지(budge a finger) 못하던 엄마가 한 달간의 혼수상태에서 깨어났다(wake up from a month-long coma). 눈도 뜨지 못한 상태에서 환자복을 잡아 내리더니(pull down her patient gown) 칭얼대는 막내딸에게 모유를 먹이기 시작했다(start to breastfeed her youngest daughter). 마법과 같은 순간(magical moment)이었다. 온 가족이 끌어안고 기쁨의 눈물을 흘렸다(shed tears of joy).

의식을 온전히 되찾은(fully regain her senses) 건 아니다. 아직은 막내딸을 느끼고 예전처럼 쓰다듬고 보듬어주는(touch and embrace her) 정도지만, 회복세가 완연해지고 있다. 모성 본능(maternal instinct)이 엄마를 깨어나게 했다는 것 외엔 달리 설명이 안 된다고 한다.
