경찰의 보도자료는 간결하면서 명료한 문장을 추구한다. 일선 경찰들이 원하는 사건 진술도 이런 보도자료 처럼 간단하면서 명료하기를 바란다고. 그러나 대부분 사람은 충격으로 횡설수설하기 마련이다.

한인의 경우, 상황에 맞지 않는 지나치게 어려운 단어를 선택하려는 경향과 한 문장 안에 너무 많은 내용을 담으려는 경향이 있다고. 경찰 보고서를 음미해보자.

리치먼드 관할 연방경찰(RCMP)은 도난된 신용카드를 사용하려 했다가 감시 영상에 잡힌 남성의 신원을 밝히는데 일반의 지원을 요청했다. (Richmond RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying a male captured on surveillance video as he attempted to use a stolen credit card.)

지난 2월 27일 리치먼드 연방경찰은 애버딘 센터 지하주차장에 있는 차 한 대가 침입을 당했다는 신고를 받았다. (On February 27th Richmond RCMP received a report that a vehicle had been broken into in the underground parking lot of Aberdeen Center.)

지갑과 내용물을 포함해 여러 가지 개인 용품이 들어있는 가방을 도난당했다. (A bag was stolen which contained various personal items including a wallet & its contents.)


경찰은 용의자(a suspect)가 잡힌 감시영상(surveillance video)을 확보했지만, 아직 용의자를 체포하지 못했다. 이 용의자는 지역 내 현금인출기(ATM)에서 피해자의 신용카드로 돈을 빼내려고 했다. (he tried to use the victim’s credit card to obtain funds from a local ATM)

경찰은 “사진에 잡힌 남성의 신원을 밝힐 수 있는 이는 갬몽(Gammon) 순경에게 전화로 신고해달라”고 요청했다. (Anyone that is able to identify the male captured in the photos is asked to please call Cst. Gammon at (604)278-1212.)
